The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has established a development a plan for 12 new commercial smart cities and is scheduled to present it to the Union Cabinet for approval as part of a significant effort to boost manufacturing and speed economic growth. This could bring the total to 20 industrial communities, adding to the eight presently under construction.
Why These Smart City Matters?
The DPIIT’s program is in line with India’s goal of boosting the Made-in-India campaign and raising the manufacturing sector’s GDP contribution. Officials gave the examples of some of the successful projects like Dholera in Gujarat and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Crucial support is expected to also come from the host cities newly announced. And the rest of us are advancing forward with power, water and area utilities
Location and Corridors:
The development of these industrial smart cities will take place along key industrial corridor as part of the National Corridor Development Programme (NICDP). The cabinet had earlier authorized 12 such nodes in august 2024, spanning 6 industrial corridors across 10 states, with a total expenditure of Rs. 28,602 crore.
Major Key Location Includes:
- Khurpia (Uttrakhand)
- Rajpara-Patiala in Punjab
- Dighi, located in Maharashtra
- Palakkad, located in Kerala
- Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh
- Gaya, located in Bihar
- Zaheerabad, located in Telangana
- Orvakal and Kopparthy, which are located in Andhra Pradesh
- Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan
Given greenfield smart cities are being designed with “Plug-and-Play” commercial and industrial hubs, and “Walk-to-Work” urban layouts. Goal to promote rapid industrial allotments along to provide commercial and residential infrastructure.
Major Focus and Goals:
The previous series of 12 projects attracted an investment of Rs. 28,602 crore and is projected to produce Rs 1.52 lakh crore in investments, resulting in approximately 1 million direct jobs and 3 million indirect jobs. In accordance with PM GatiShakti principles, these cities also seek to enhance India’s export goals of achieving $2 trillion by year 2030.
International Competitiveness and Environmental Responsibility
Given industrial nodes will integrate ICT unities, sustainable technology and steam lined environmental clearance. The objective is to elevate India as competitive participant in global value chain by utilizing seamless connectivity, efficient logistics, and environmentally sustainable practices.
Momentum on the Ground
Gaya (Bihar) has secured support for the Combined Manufacturing Clusters, featuring an investment of Rs. 1,350 crore and 1,670 acres designated for the project.
Currently Underway Projects:
Dholera, Auric, Krishnapatnam, and Vikram Udyogpuri. These are focusing on the development of supply, water, roads, and power infrastructure.
What Comes Next?
These are anticipated to allocate funds for important development roads, land purchase, utilities within 3 years, based upon securing state support. The proposal will be presented to the Union Cabinet for approval by DPIIT. Once approved, comprehensive master plans and frameworks for the Special Purpose Vehicle will be developed in partnership with state government.
