Tata's N. Chandrasekaran visits Dholera a day after announcement of semiconductor fab unit

Tata Group to Build the Nation’s First Fab in Dholera

One day after that, Tata Group made the historic announcement that it will construct India’s first commercial semiconductor manufacturing facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR). Tata Sons chairman Natarajan “Chandra” Chandrasekaran paid a visit to the area today.

A significant step in India’s ambition for technical independence is the Rs. 91,000 crore factories that Tata Electronics is establishing in partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMS). Up to 50,000 wafers, spanning 28 nm to 55 nm nodes, will be produced monthly by it for use in the automotive, telecom, artificial intelligence, military, power management, display driver, and microcontroller industries.

Tata’s dedication to rapid execution is clear in Chandrasekaran’s visit, which took place barely 24 hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the fab’s foundation stone. According to reports, the chairman was informed on preliminary site preparations, including land separation, soil testing, and civil works, while he was accompanied by top Tata Electronics and PSMC leaders.

The initiative to turn Dholera into a center for semiconductors, which was started last year, is already well under construction. To help the workforce, especially suppliers and overseas workers, local authorities have opened bids for residency, hospitals, schools, and green parks.

The government announced plans to construct 1,500 residential units in Dholera SIR for future workers, foreign nationals, and partner vendors.

This Dholera project is part of a larger plan to build a self-sufficient ecosystem, which also includes a Rs. 200 crore investment for an integrated township with environmental infrastructure, schools, and hospitals.

A plan to create a “Global Tent City” with international food streets, culture events, and recreational facilities in an attempt to make international talent feel at home was detailed in a Reddit post from late March.

Technological and Economical Decisions

It is anticipated that the manufacturing facilities will create more than 20,000 indirect and direct jobs, boosting Gujarat’s aspiration in the semiconductor industry. Additionally, it diversifies reliance on well-established hubs like Taiwan and South Korea by positioning India as a crucial node in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The facility hopes to achieve industry-best efficiency by implementing AI-driven automation and advanced analytics. Wafer fabrication and packaging technology transfer from PSMC will also create a strong domestic Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) infrastructure.

One Step Toward Semiconductor Powerhouse

The flagship smart city of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is Dholera SIR, which spans 920 km. Four of India’s five new semiconductor manufacturing units, including the Tata-PSMC fab, will be located near Dholera in the coming years.

Chandrasekaran confirmed Tata’s intentions to start production by the end of 2026, expediting a normally four-year process. Tata intends to test both advanced 14 nm and 28 nm chip nodes at the location through the PSMC cooperation.
