Centre Shares Update on Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway Construction Progress

The Union Government has released a big update on the Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway and stated that the same is on schedule to be ready by the end of the 2024–25 financial year. An important link to Bharatmala Pariyojana and subprojects under DMIC, this 109 km Greenfield Expressway will completely change the connectivity between Ahmedabad and Dholera. Although work will be executed by a private developer, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari assured that the government will ensure that the project is completed from its end within this timeframe, to global standards.

Construction Status

As of the 30th of June, 2024, 71 kilometers of the total 109 kilometers have been completed. The expressway is being constructed in four packages at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,373 crore. The 3,920 crore has been spent. By March 2025, construction progress was 91% and achieved 95% by May, after a comprehensive site inspection conducted by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The last 38 kilometers include the completion of blacktopping, electrical installation, signage, and landscaping efforts.

The expressway includes several important infrastructure elements, most of which are either finished or nearing completion. The diamond interchanges at the Sardar Patel Ring Road is now operational, with ongoing work on road marking and aesthetic improvements. The construction of a 700-meter- long railway over bridge is underway, with the ramps and pillars completed and the steel girder work advancing smoothly. Key Interchanges- Pipli (linking to Dholera International Airport), Ambli (serving Dholera SIR), and Adhelai (directing to Bhavnagar) – are either approaching completion or have been fully constructed. An advanced, automated toll plaza has been set up for operation.

Strategic Connectivity

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway, designed as a four-lane access-controlled expressway with the potential to expand to eight lanes, will greatly decrease travel time between the two cities, reducing it down from over two hours to merely 40–45 minutes. The bidding for the 9.5-km connector road to the upcoming Dholera International Airport has made it strategically important, especially for cargo and passenger traffic. Upon completion, this expressway will serve as a key logistic chain to boost fast industrial growth in Gujarat.”

‘The expressway will play a critical role in unlocking the full potential of Dholera SIR (special investment region), India’s first greenfield smart city. Large companies such as Tata Electronics, Tata Power, Polycab, and ReNew Power have already bet big on the region. The enhanced connectivity is expected to attract more investment, create jobs, and position Dholera as an integrated hub for semiconductor and green energy manufacturing and advanced manufacturing. The expressway is expected to create over 800,000 immediate jobs in the locality within ten years.

Focus on Green Infrastructure

The construction process has constantly prioritized environmental sustainability. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has integrated more than 35 million cubic meters of recycled waste and 174 million cubic meters of fly ash into the process of road construction. Furthermore, almost 100,000 trees are being planted along the corridor, and the highway’s design incorporates provisions for wildlife crossing, drainage, and eco-sensitive features.

Completion and Future Outlook

The expressway was 95% complete as of May 2025 and was anticipated to be fully complete by the middle to end of 2025. When open, it will not only boost mobility and alleviate traffic but also aid in the expedited transformation of Dholera as a smart industrial and residential destination. The road is future-focused, with capacity for growth and with state-of-the-art features that match long-term infrastructure desires.

Conclusion

The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway is a great example of India’s infrastructure development, balancing speed, scale, and sustainability. RSC Group always keeps an eye on the situation and is willing to support the infrastructure-led growth of Dholera as it nears completion.
